"Union"

"Union" was developed as an installation at ESAP, guided by professors Francisco Jesus and Paulo Fernandes with the collaboration of FCUP, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, namely Dr. Sílvia Cabral and Ms. Ana Gavina. This project has as it's main theme artificial intelligence. The installations consists of a set of 8 videos of microscopic living beings arranged in a pre-conceived order, so as to have the most basic being in the first video and the last being the most complex and evolved. These videos transition from one another through the use of movement sensors. The videos change depending on the movement that exists, depending on the interaction of the viewer.
This way the scientific language utilized in the scientific world was applied to the artistic world. The acts of the audience determine the timing at which the evolution happens, otherwise, if there is no interaction, the structure is made so it evolves on it's own, with it's own timing. The participants are key elements to complement the complex image portrayed by the video, each interaction leads to new results that, in turn, change the behavior of the general system and of the participants.  Here lies the critique to the boundaries surpassed by humans in regard to artificial life. As a result, the relationship between the space and the viewer also experiences changes. Everything we do affects what is around us. Each of us must be aware of that fact. The video ends up going back to the beginning, this is a cyclical experience much like life. The installation is arranged in a dark room on two opposing walls. The motion sensors are on the floor, hidden. There is a muffled and distant sound that causes an atmosphere of strangeness in the spectator.
